Bmo Rotational Program
4 summer internships, 4 years studying business in university… now what? My grand plan of graduating and having it all figured out was failing quickly! In what I believed was the ultimate procrastination attempt, I decided to target rotational programs to buy some time before making a “real” career decision. At the very least, I figured that a couple of years rotating through different businesses would have good resume value. As luck would have it, I was accepted into Bank of Montreal’s (BMO) Wealth Management Rotational Program. Though I didn’t realize it at the time, the program offered so much more than just an understanding of the different wealth business models.
T-minus 6 Months to Make an Impact:
Structured as four 6-month rotations across BMO’s wealth businesses, it was the ability to “ramp up” quickly that determined how successful you were in a given rotation. Working backwards, a 6-month end date meant that I wanted to have delivered something significant by 3-months and thus needed a plan in place at the 1-month mark. The rotations taught me how to be proactive. I would ask a ton of questions as I began each new role, and took the time to connect with my peers to understand both the business and how to make an impact. Adapting quickly to new teams, managerial styles and work environments was essential and those skills have since helped me transition to an unfamiliar industry when I joined LinkedIn a few months ago. Our generation is becoming notorious for leaving roles faster than ever before. The jury is still out on the “correct” amount of time in role or at a company, but given this trend, it is now more important than ever to hit the ground running. To avoid being overlooked for the right opportunity, the speed at which you’re able to build your reputation and make an impact can make all of the difference.
Accelerated Networking:
56% of new job seekers begin their job search by leveraging their personal networks according a recent LinkedIn survey. While this speaks to the importance of having a large network of advocates, the challenge for most of us is around actually building that vast network. The rotational program offered a great way around this. We were put in a position to meet and develop working relationships with new people every time we transitioned roles. This accelerated networking paid huge dividends. We had the opportunity to seek out mentors and advocates across various businesses/functional groups, whom not only provided a diverse set of perspectives as we thought about future roles, but also put us on the radars of those who could significantly influence our career trajectory. More importantly, my personal network actually helped me perform my job more effectively by encouraging collaboration. I would frequently find myself on the phone with peers across other businesses discussing key learnings and the broader impact of our initiatives on their businesses. While having a large network is and will always be important, the rotational program taught me the importance of actually leaning on my network as a sounding board for new initiatives and projects.
Identifying Energizing Work
While many of us may never find work that we truly love, a much more reasonable benchmark may be finding work that we like and are energized by. If someone had forced me in university to bet on what I’d be doing now, I probably would have guessed an equity analyst role because I liked the markets and enjoyed analytical work. However, the rotational program allowed for 4 risk-free attempts to try work that I may never otherwise have been exposed to. After experiencing everything from asset allocation and business development to strategy work, I quickly realized that I enjoyed solving business challenges and was able to pursue a role out of the program on a strategy & implementation team. We’ve all heard that the worst thing you can do for your career is become too comfortable and start operating on auto-pilot. A rotational program will ensure that this doesn’t happen and will seek to put you outside of your comfort zone. This is very intentional though and will help you discover the type of work that energizes and excites you.
Bmo Trading Products Rotational Program
Many of the largest employers of new graduates now offer rotational programs. From banks to innovative startups like Dropbox, companies are realizing that these programs aren’t just great for prospective employees but also accrue real benefits to the employer from a future leadership potential standpoint. Rotational programs don’t delay the inevitable career decision making process. Rather, they teach you how to ramp up quickly in a new role, build and leverage your professional network and hopefully identify the work that you love doing.
